Calculating Quantity of Earth by Knowing Dry Density Test of the Soil.
Task: To know the Density of the Soil in Kg/cum
Objective: To determine the volume and weight of earth work for payment of royalty, excavation and filling by knowing the Density of the Soil. (unit of density of soil is Kg/cum).
To calculate volume of quantity of Earth / Sand / Material we need to know 'Density of the Material'. Normally density of material is calculated by collecting core sample of the material either by drilling bore or taking loose samples from the stack. This task is performed in Soil Testing Laboratory either on the site or by the professional Soil Testing Laboratory.
Working out the Quantity of Soil:
To work out weight of soil we need to multiply Volume by Density of Soil so for given volume of 50 cum and soil having dry density of 1.70 Ton/cum the weight of soil will be
Vol x Density (Ton/cum)
i.e 50 x 1.7 = 85 Ton.
To work out volume of soil with given weight of the Soil, we need to divide weight by the dry density of the soil, so for given weight of 16 tons the volume of the soil will be :
16 Tons/1.7 = 9.40 cum.
